Onchocerciasis: Understanding the Disease, Its Impact, and the Path Toward Elimination
Onchocerciasis, widely known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease that has shaped the lives of millions living in remote tropical regions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite being preventable and treatable, it remains one of the neglected tropical diseases that disproportionately affect communities with limited access to healthcare, clean water, and awareness. At the center of this disease is a tiny blackfly, often found near fast-flowing rivers and streams, that transmits Onchocerca volvulus, a parasitic worm capable of causing serious skin and eye complications.
The infection begins when a blackfly carrying larvae bites a person, allowing the microscopic parasites to enter the body. These larval forms mature into adult worms, forming nodules under the skin where they can live for over a decade.
